The Accusation by Zosia Wand (Thriller, 10E/10E)

June 2018, Head of Zeus, 352 pages, Ebook, Review copy

Summary from Head of Zeus
Eve and Neil live in the beautiful Cumbrian town of Tarnside. After years of trying for a baby, they are in the final stages of adopting four-year-old Milly.

They just have to pass the 'settling in' period – three months of living together as a family under watchful eyes – and then they can make it official.

For Eve, her heartbreak is nearly at an end. She now has this perfect little girl in her life, a little girl who calls her mummy.

But Eve's dream of a happy family is fragile. Any hint of trouble and the adoption could collapse. One misunderstanding, one rumour, one accusation, could smash Eve's family to pieces.

Nayu's thoughts
Thrillers, as the name suggests, need to be thrilling, and Eve's tale didn't disappoint at all! Any story involving a child, especially if it's a young child, tends to grab my attention, and I was mightily glad I had a few consecutive non-interrupted hours to finish this tale. Adoption in general interests me because I've a friend who has recently undergone the process. While the reward, if successful, is a life lasting one, adoption is a brutal process which for Eve is made doubly worse because of a certain someone in her family who claims Eve has a screw loose, when it is them who is the problem.

I felt so bad reading what Eve has to go through, because that family member screwed with her mind, which heavily impacted Eve's adoption. I obviously can't say all that happened, as it should be a surprise when you read it, but being made out to be an unfit mother when the opposite is true by someone whose opinion will be believed was horrifying to see. I wanted to shout the truth to the authorities who were blinded by lies so thought the wrong things about Eve. I wanted certain people to rescue Eve when she had no escape from the certain someone who was messing with her head and her life.

Eve is a brilliant mother, and seeing her being undermined and made out to be the nutter by the nutter was hard to read, but I promise the ending is a happy one, eventually. It could easily have been a tragedy, which is why I always recommend reading thrillers in one sitting: having to leave off at a certain part is agonising! It was bad enough leaving the book for a few minutes while I got got refreshments. There are many major plot twists which took me by surprise, the amount of calculation by the certain someone to get their own way was chilling, and the almost constant fear of Eve and her husband losing their new darling daughter was hard to stomach. You won't be disappointed by reading this tale, which is firmly on my reread shelf.
