Blog Tour: The Hurricane by R J Prescott (Romance, New Adult, 10/10E, short 'n' sweet review)

17th March 2016, Piatkus, 368 pages, Ebook,  Review copy,

Content: a lot of strong violence + language + romance, occasional strong abuse including rape scene, tissues needed

Summary from Piatkus Entice
A love that’s worth keeping is worth fighting for . . .

Emily McCarthy is living in fear of a dark and dangerous past. A gifted mathematician, she is little more than a hollow, broken shell, trying desperately to make ends meet long enough to finish her degree.

Through an unlikely friendship with the aging, cantankerous owner of an old boxing gym, Em is thrown into the path of the most dangerous man that she has ever met.

Cormac “the Hurricane” O’Connell is cut, tattooed and dangerous. He is a lethal weapon with no safety and everyone is waiting for the mis-fire. He’s never been knocked out before, but when he meet Em he falls, HARD. Unlike any other girl he’s ever met, she doesn’t want anything from him.

Just being around her makes him want to be a better person.

They are polar opposites who were never meant to find each other, but some things are just worth the fight.

Nayu's thoughts
While the language is certainly colourful, prolific and entirely in keeping with the rougher nature of most of the characters, (and it's very easy to skip past the steamy scenes) I absolutely loved The Hurricane and I'm so glad there's a second book on the way! It is from O'Connell's point of view so I'll have to be in the right mood to read it, but because it involves Emily I want to see if they get their happy ever after.

It's full of the true meaning of family, which if you're from a broken home as so many of the characters are family isn't something you're born with but something you acquire. The strength of all the friendships made me reaching for the tissues, and was a real pleasure to see develop.

Emily is AMAZING! She is so sweet and caring, always trying to protect herself which makes her endearing to all who know her. Her desire to stay free from her past makes her make some unwise decisions, but thankfully she slowly learns to extend her friendship circle, and in doing so finding the true meaning of family. I loved how she was doing her best to improve her life, but eventually accepts help from others, especially when they give her things in such a way it would be rude for her to say no. You'll need more tissues for the heartwarming moments which are many.

The level of protection Emily gains from simply knowing Danny increases tenfold when she agrees to work for him and meets his ragtag version of family. While the flashbacks of her traumatic past are emotionally hard to read, they helped reveal little by little why she is so fearful of men. At first her new friends don't know her full history, but they sense that there's a reason for her timidness: they respect that and help her gain confidence in herself, more so O'Connell who has a similar tricky situation which also unravels as the story progress. More tissue moments!

He really is different to Emily. It was nice to see a softer side to him, it helps him fully understand Emily, although it takes her almost forever to accept just how much he loves her. While Emily may take her time trusting people and seem timid, she has an inner strength and passion for life which is drawn out as her new friendships deepen, which prove useful when she has to face her inner and outer demons.

I may not necessarily approve of boxing (neither does Emily) but it can help channel aggression and keep people off the streets and out of trouble. The way almost everyone in Danny's work is desperate to take care of Emily is sweet, innuendos aside they are a good bunch. And the title can apply to both Emily and O'Connell

I'm hoping this comes out on audiobook as I can't wait to reread it, it's that good. Definitely one for your shelf!

Nayu's News #212 A Craft Filled Day!

Had my own sleeping beauty moment at the weekend
I'm back from my fun weekend away, which consisted of me being super tired almost every day, so much so I had a 4 hour nap on Saturday afternoon. I don't nap unless ill, but it helped me so much that in the future if I'm tired I'll nap! It didn't seem to affect my sleep.

Probably going to be a few more days until I'm fully recovered from the weekend, but today I'm  heading off for a day of craft and fun with a friend! Will update you on what we do in due course.

This is a big part of my day today!

Guest Review: Terminal by Kathy Reichs (Young Adult, 9/10E, short 'n' sweet review)

October 2015, Arrow, 400 pages, Paperback, Review copy

Themes: friendship, adventure, drama, violence, good vs. evil, teen life, special abilities, animals, family,  following clues, growing up, danger, science and technology.

Summary from Penguin Random House
The gripping finale to Kathy and Brendan Reichs’ New York Times bestselling VIRALS series

The Virals are back—but they’re not the only pack in town anymore. Terminal finds Tory Brennan and the rest of the Morris Island gang tracking a pack of rogue Virals who call themselves the Trinity. The new pack was infected by a strain of supervirus created by Tory’s nemesis and sometimes-crush, Chance Clayborne, who accidentally infected himself, too.

These red-eyed Virals have openly challenged Tory’s pack for domination of Charleston, and they’ll stop at nothing to bring their rivals down—even if that means giving them up to a shadowy government agency intent on learning the secret to the Virals’ powers. Surviving it all is going to test the limits of the gang’s abilities.

In the riveting conclusion to the Virals series, Tory and the others are nearing an impossible choice—and the ultimate showdown.

Review by Laura, one of Nayu's friends who absolutely adores the Bones TV series based on Kathy's book series.
I have enjoyed reading the Virals series by Kathy Reichs and her son Brendan, so I was delighted when my lovely friend Nayu asked if I wanted to read the most recent instalment.  Following a great cliff hanger at the end of book four, Exposure, in which we learned that Chance Claybourne, a former crush of Tory Brennan’s, had been infected with a different strain of the canine supervirus which had already changed Tory and her friends, I couldn’t wait to start reading Terminal.

In the fifth book Tory and her pack face another difficult adventure.  They are no longer the only group of Virals.  Another pack, the Trinity, goad and taunt them, wanting to show their dominance in the town of Charleston.  I enjoyed this new take on the usual “good vs. evil” story and the group’s realisation that their individual powers are not a match for the opposing red-eyed gang.  I am also very proud that I figured out the twist and identified the female member of the Trinity before she was revealed! (You will have to read it for yourself to find out!)

Whilst trying to stop the new Viral pack from revealing the secrets of their enhanced powers, Tory and her friends are also trying to learn more about the virus that infected them and what this might mean for their futures.  Meanwhile, the Trinity are luring a government agency to Tory’s pack which could potentially mean that their abilities would be known to the world and used to create others like them.  This book delves deeper into the science of the supervirus and how it impacts on those who are infected.  The Virals also have to make a big decision whether to keep their powers and continue to be hunted, or take an antidote and lose their abilities for good.

I also enjoyed to growing relationships between the group of friends and the different reactions of each member of the group to Chance becoming Viral.  It was interesting how Reichs explored the different emotions of acceptance and trust and played these against the characters who were less willing to allow Chance into the original pack.  I loved that we saw more of the relationships between Tory, Ben and Chance develop and was very pleased with how it all turned out in the end (no spoilers – sorry!)

As I came to the end of the book, I felt a little sad as I thought this could be the last book of the series.  However, by the last line I was punching the air and whooping!  Kathy and Brendan Reichs caught me out again with a brilliant twist! Can’t wait to see how the series continues. (Nayu: sadly it is the last book, but maybe there will be a sequel eventually!)

Mini anime review: Kobato (Magical girl anime, 10E/10E)

This is Kobato from the anime Kobato: haven't seen her wear this so don't know if it's in the anime or a promotional image.
I'm busy with family today, but here's something cute to brighten up your day! Kobato is a happy go lucky girl, a bit ditzy, trying to make the world a better place so her own wish can be fulfilled. There's a time limit, so I hope she can make it! It's a magical girl anime, funny, with some more serious elements. From the episodes I've seen so far I highly recommend it!

Mini anime review: Aikatsu! (Sumire, season 4)

Sumire is so cute!
While I'm away I thought I'd share a picture from what is possibly my most favourite anime, Aikatsu! If I remember correctly this is from the 4th season. It's a Wizard of Oz themed outfit - I hate the story of that book, but love the dress! This is the image once she has changed into the outfit right before her performance. Note the red shoes which are a major element of the story.

I'm taking my portable dvd player with me, so while I can't watch this particular episode I still have Aikatsu to relax with. Aikatsu forever raises my spirits, almost always has a happy theme, is super colourful, cute, and fun!
She even dances on a yellow brick road  I promise it is a narrow-ish road: this is the end of it, where she finished her performance

Nayu's News #211 Time for an update!

Hi everyone, it's time for an update on what I've been up to. I've been being allergic to allergy eyedrops, as well as having my super strong pain meds on Sunday which I'm now vaguely back to normal.
My allergies made me cry a lot.
I've been busy making a lot of sweet treats for this weekend (I'm away) - they taste as yummy as they look!
I've managed to put up a post for tomorrow and Sunday, the rest are cute picture filler posts like the one below: I'd hoped to do more, but really busy this afternoon and running out of time this morning (I still have to have necessary rest time). Once I'm back expect a barrage of reviews!
Bye for now!

Hidamari Sketch
Slice of Life anime, Japanese version

Thirteen
Drama, English version
10/10E
(Episode 2/5 ends on a cliffhanger as Ivy gets kidnapped [again...] after it being made clear she got on with her captor rather well. I loved the family scenes, as they were awkward. There's this moment when Ivy thinks she's alone so starts eating frosting out the bowl with both hands [rather than a finger {who uses a spoon?}], and her entire family were watching. To break the ice her sister joined in! Adore the sister so much for trying to make things easy on Ivy, even though they are ever so hard...)

 Super Sonico
Slice of Life & Music anime, Japanese version
9/10E
(I didn't watch this show before as there's so much inappropriate images online, but I saw someone enjoyed it [who liked all things cute] so I thought I'd give it a go, and there are inappropriate scenes but on a small screen they are easy to skip past, it's a wonderful slice of life show with the ditzy Sonico!)

CRAFT GAMES AND MORE
I may not have read much but I've been baking. Made these soft flapjacks whose tale I'll tell soon on my crochet blog, as it involves me adding the wrong quantity of ingredients in the 1st batch ...

Then there's the two types of fudge, milk chocolate & white chocolate – this is all for a family weekend away next weekend. Making more truffles very soon!

I've started on the border for my pastel blanket – will use the colours in the squares in the the purple border too.
