Pocket Cats #8: Magical Mayhem by Kitty Wells

March 2011, David Fickling Books
208 pages, Paperback
Review copy

Children's

Friendship, antique auctions and shops, ghosts, magical cats, estate agents, family history, investigating, tissues needed (I always cry at the end when the cat returns to being an ornament), lots of laughs,

Summary from Random House Children's Books
Maddy has always wanted a cat, but now she's got something even better - three small ceramic cats which come to life and give her magical powers!

Maddy is delighted to see Nibs again, and she can't believe her new cat power - she can see ghosts! Maddy's Aunt Tilly's antique shop is being haunted and to undo the curse, Maddy must return an old gold locket to its rightful owner. But how will she figure out who the locket belongs to? With a little bit of magic and a lot of mayhem, Maddy and Nibs are determined to solve the spooky mystery!

Nayuleska's reasons for liking Maddy: she's highly skilled in her invisibility skill (made funnier when she has to 'think cat' to activate it), and is devoted to the cats when they come to life.

Is there another character who deserves a special mention? Maddy's best friend Rachel, who plays a pretty big role in this adventure, because she's quite clever in distracting people when Maddy is out being invisible.

How evil/nasty is the enemy? Not evil per se - she's just a stubborn ghost who won't let people rest easy until her personal quest is complete.

Are there plenty of plot twists and surprises? There's a fair smattering of them!

One of my favourite parts was...when Jodie felt she had to stay in Maddy's aunt's shop (that doesn't make much sense but I can't give away the end).

I give it...10/10. These cats are so cute and Maddy/Rachel are great adventurers.
