Chewy Noh and the Fall of the Mu-Dang by Tim Learn and Kevin Learn (Young Adult, 8/10E, short 'n' sweet review)

December 2014, Smashwords, 391 pages, Ebook, review copy

Content: facing fears, mysterious powers, tissues needed

Summary from Tim's website
Chewy Noh has problems. He was born with them. Two weeks after his birth, the family fortune-teller saw bad things in his future…and she was right. The school bully hates him and will stop at nothing to get rid of him. His mother suddenly can’t get out of bed, complaining of horrible headaches. And worst of all, the secret his grandmother is hiding may be at the root of it all. But why should he worry? He’s a superhero with a power no one’s ever seen before.

Nayu's thoughts
Chewy has fascinating superpowers which lead him to trouble. They were ones I'd never come across, and in some respects felt like cheating because he wasn't working hard or using his talent. Having said that there are times when his particular power comes in handy and nothing else would do. Sometimes he seemed a bit too sure of himself, and the story didn't always flow which explains the grade.

I did love the reason why Chewy's friend couldn't visit his house for so long, the concept of the Mu-Dang, and the whole scenario of Chewy's mother when tragedy befalls her. I think that's my favourite part of the book, because Chewy loves his mother ever so much, and she doesn't want to be a burden. I felt awful for him, having to stay with a friend until she was well, when what ailed here was SPOILER. According to Tim Learn on 1st June on Twitter book 2 is in progress - whoohoo!
