Summary from Ricki the Warlock website
Ricki seems very much like your normal twelve year old boy except
for one thing… he’s a Warlock. Unbeknown to his family – who believe
Ricki is just a budding magician, the story takes you on his journey
from initiation to performing at the school talent show and along the
way dealing with the school bullies – Warlock style! All with the help
of his best mate and Warlock Assistant, Gary. The only person who knows
Ricki’s secret power.
Nayu's thoughts
Being
taken seriously as a warlock isn't easy, and Ricki explains to
readers why that's the case. I joined some of Ricki's classmates'
views that he is a little crazy, but he did manage to help people as
well as causing a little chaos. The story made me laugh a lot, and
feel sorry when things didn't pan out in Ricki's favour.
The
not quite perfect rating comes from the fact I felt the illustrations
seemed to be for older characters, rather than those Ricki's age, and
the end was sudden and it felt like there possibly could have been a
bit more explained/happening to make it dramatic. It will appeal to
all who like magic – both the kind the works & the kind that
doesn't, all who like a good story, and who have a sense of humour.
