Enormouse by Angie Morgan (Children's, Picture book 10E/10E, short 'n' sweet review)

October 2013, Frances Lincoln, 32 pages, Hardback, Review copy

Summary from Frances Lincoln
Enormouse is bigger than all the other mice in the mousehole – and he looks different too. He is teased by the other mice, even though he takes care of them, and when the mice find a picture of a rat they all decide that Enormouse is actually a rat.

Poor Enormouse leaves the mousehole and goes to join the rats. But what he discovers is that looks aren’t everything. The rats are dirty and untidy, and he is not at all like them. Now he realises where his true home lies…

Meanwhile the mice have also realised their mistake. They miss Enormouse and set out on a dark and dangerous journey to find their friend and bring him home.

Nayuleska's thoughts
This sweet tale of belonging feels even more realistic because of something that isn't shown on the cover. Every so often photos of objects are used instead of illustrations-these blend seamlessly into the main illustration and gave me something to marvel at. The mice are adorable in how they play with Enormouse, and how after being mean to Enormouse they set off on a journey despite having no idea where he is and getting scared too. Enormouse's experiences go to show that it's more than ok to be different, and where you think you should fit in isn't where you do fit in which is also ok.

Suggested read
Another tale of belonging can be found in Chilly Milly Moo by Fiona Ross (Children's, Picture book, 9/10E)
