The Lucy Variations by Sara Zarr (Young Adult, 8/10)

May 2013, Usborne, 346 pages, Paperback, Review copy, Short ‘n’ Sweet review

Content: death, strong teen crush gone weird,

Summary from Usborne
Lucy Beck-Moreau once had a promising future as a concert pianist. The right people knew her name, her performances were booked months in advance, and her future seemed certain. That was all before she turned fourteen. Now, at sixteen, it's over. A death, and a betrayal, have led her to walk away, leaving her talented ten-year-old brother, Gus, to shoulder the full weight of the Beck-Moreau family's expectations. Then Gus gets a new piano teacher who is young, handsome, and interested in helping Lucy rekindle her love of piano - on her own terms. But when you're used to performing for sold-out audiences and world-famous critics, can you ever learn to play just for yourself?

Nayuleska's thoughts
I loved the personal battles Lucy went through in her music obssessed family, and the family's butler/cook/housekeeper/confidante was the sole constant for Lucy. I absolutely hated the icky path the plot took romance wise - I only kept reading because I wanted Lucy to listen to her best friend and see sense.

Another read about a life which changes because of a death try Forget Me Never by Gina Blaxill (Young Adult, 10/10)
